Ahimsa

watercolors – Ahimsa is a sanskrit word that means non–violence, or the avoidance of violence (ie. do no harm). It is a sometimes is used in the context of humans' relationship with animals, in that any pain or injury to living beings should be avoided. This was a painting I was inspired to do for quite a while, without knowing how (how realistic, semi–abstract or painterly) I should paint it –– but no matter, once the drawing was put on paper, this image was an intrinsically joyous to paint. (And the ripples were the most important thing...) This painting is dedicated to all trying to practice more universal kindness –– may you never tire or wane in your effort.

Green Tara ACEO

watercolors – Painted for an Artist Card Exchange with Tara Catalano! I suggested the subject for the ACEO and was a little tickled to find out Green Tara was her favorite Buddha/Bodhisattva. I do love Tara (Catalano!)'s work. Wonderful textures and colors –– go have a look!

This painting turned out a little different from what I originally planned. Tara is a difficult subject to paint, but very rewarding indeed.

Windhorse

watercolors – The Wind Horse, or windhorse, or Lung–Ta, is a mythical Tibetan creature (predating even Buddhism) that carries prayers from earth to heaven. A Tibetan prayer flag is now commonly called lung–ta too. I thought the windhorse drawing commonly found on some prayer flags would make a delicious little ACEO. (This was also drawn freehand in ink. Which explains, but does not excuse, the slight wonkiness of the horse!)
